Located on the Barwon River in Ngemba Country( Brewarrina), these stone fish traps are an ancient and complex system which were created and used for thousands of years by Ngemba and Wayilwan/Wailwan peoples. They are considered by some to be among the oldest man-made structures on Earth.
In local dreaming stories it is said that the ancestral creation beings Baiame and his two sons, Booma-ooma-nowi and Ghinda-inda-mui built the traps by throwing a net over the river and creating the structure from that design.
